Hi, I'm Elise, the photographer behind floragraphica

My training and work as a naturopath and my Master of Public Health have shaped what I choose to photograph: flowering herbal medicines, Australian natives, and species whose beauty rewards close looking.

I make photographs of flowers and plants the way a portrait photographer makes photographs of people. Each subject is separated from its environment so that nothing distracts from it — no setting, no story other than the one the bloom is telling. Long exposure and natural light let me work at a deep depth of field, so the texture, shadow and structure of each flower is held in detail.

The intent is to insist on the innate beauty of each individual flower, particularly those - like Australian native flora - whose beauty is structural and unconventional rather than soft and immediate.

At a time when the natural world is suffering from decades of neglect and misuse, it feels important to me to make work that asks the viewer to stop, look closely, and celebrate what is right in front of them.

Sustainability statement

It is important to me that Floragraphica is run as sustainable as possible. I work with local, ethical suppliers and makers, use a sustainable energy supplier, and offset carbon emissions through Greenfleet.
